23/5/2011 - Your Car Can Check You Health?

Within the next couple years, your car will notice if you have low blood sugar and tell you to have a snack; check local pollen counts and roll up your windows to prevent an allergy attack; and at lunch time, give you directions to the nearest healthy-eating establishment, pausing your iPod to broadcast the restaurant’s menu.

Using a suite of new apps Ford announced Wednesday, personalized medicine could soon be as simple as revving your engines. Now we just need someone to record some lines as KITT.

Ford is working with three medical technology firms to build web-connected apps for its Sync onboard communications interface. The programs are still in the research stages and won’t make it to market for at least a year or two. In the meantime, the automaker wants to highlight its increasing focus on consumers’ health, according to Paul Mascarenas, Ford’s chief technology officer.

“People are spending so much time behind the wheel, and that’s expected to increase as we go forward, with increased traffic density and congestion,” he said. “(This is) about seeing the car as more than just a car. It’s now a platform that we can use for development, innovation, and connectivity.”

Ford executives said they are not planning to have car apps that monitor blood alcohol, however, which seems like an obvious health and safety solution, especially when the company pointed to prevention of crashes involving hypoglycemic patients. The focus is on chronic disease monitoring and general wellness, Ford says.

Ford's concept turns cars into tools, redefining them as personal assistants and life coaches the way smartphone apps have transformed cell phones.

Ford is not targeting a specific consumer market for the technology, Mascarenas said — it could benefit anyone from frugal Fiesta drivers to owners of pricey Lincolns.

A driver would use simple voice commands to control Ford’s Sync system, which the company says would keep drivers’ eyes on the road. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood has been on a crusade against driving distractions, especially text messaging and other mobile phone use. (The U.S. Department of Transportation considers cognitive distractions a hazard as well.)

Ford showed off some prototypes at a press briefing Wednesday. Press a button, say the word “allergy,” and the Sync allergy app advises you about environmental irritants in your Post code, which can cause allergic reactions and asthma attacks. The system uses the car’s GPS system, local weather info and pollen data. In Dearborn, Mich., on a drizzly Wednesday, birch and maple pollen was the predominant problem.

Another app, developed with the health monitoring company Medtronic, would connect to wireless-enabled glucose monitors used by diabetics. The driver would use voice commands to access his or her blood sugar records, which are stored in the cloud, and the car could ask questions to ensure that the driver’s blood sugar is not too low — such as, “did you eat breakfast yet today?” If the data suggests the driver is at risk of losing concentration or fainting due to low blood sugar, the car would recommend a snack, explained Dave Melcher, a Ford research engineer. The system is meant to help diabetics monitor their illness, but also to prevent accidents.

If in-car technology can already detect someone’s blood sugar, it’s not a giant leap to sensors that can detect other biometric data — like blood alcohol. Cars that read a driver’s blood alcohol content before starting the ignition, and thereby preventing drunk drivers, would provide an obvious public safety benefit. But Ford is not headed down that road, at least not right now, Mascarenas said.

“We have to do more research in that area ... the focus is on health and wellness,” he demurred.

He and other execs who spoke Wednesday emphasized that the apps are intended to be proactive and provide positive reinforcement, not punitive measures. Other apps could help drivers quit smoking, find healthier eating options or even de-stress by monitoring their heart rates.

WellDoc, a company that offers personal health data tracking via mobile apps, has initiated clinical trials in which diabetic patients show marked improvement simply through this sort of additional monitoring. Putting that interface in a car, everyone’s private, captive sanctuary, could be another way to keep patients connected, said Anand Iyer, the company's president and chief operating officer.

It’s odd at first to hear automotive engineers use terms like “health outcomes” and to hear medical gadget programmers talk about cars as “mobile devices.” But that’s a great thing about technology — it can lead to strange bedfellows that produce useful offspring.

18/5/2011 - All New Ford Focus

ANFFW
News from Ford
All-New Focus to offer WIFI in 2012

Brentwood, Essex, May 2011 - The all-new Ford Focus will be transformed into a rolling WiFi hot spot when Ford SYNC with MyFord Touch technology makes its UK debut next year.

Ford Focus owners will be the first in the UK to benefit from SYNC’s class-leading connectivity, which will be rolled out to several other Ford vehicles following its debut on the new global C-segment model.

By using an owners’ existing USB modem or Smartphone, the SYNC-equipped Focus will be able to deliver a secure wireless connection that can be broadcast throughout the vehicle. Passengers with any WiFi-enabled device can then easily connect and access the internet. All this allows for simple, easy to use WiFi connectivity on the move for up to five devices.

Using SYNC’s far reaching connectivity potential, Ford will offer individuals and families a level of in-car internet access that was until recently only available to the owners of considerably more expensive vehicles.

In-car internet access is no longer only demanded by chauffeur-driven executives. The increasing availability and popularity of WiFi compatible devices means that, as long as there is a data connection brought into the car, Ford passengers will be able to stay in contact with friends, keep abreast of the news and even play the latest games on the move and at all times.

“Ford is an automaker that is quickly becoming a personal technology company as well,” says Christof Kellerwessel, chief engineer for electronic and electrical systems. “We’re finding that Ford customers are tech savvy and – while travelling as passengers in cars – they want to be able to use their WiFi enabled devices while on the move.

“A reliable in-car internet connectionis therefore extremely important to them, and that’s exactly what SYNC will offer when it makes its UK debut on the Ford Focus in 2012. SYNCwith MyFord Touch will offer rolling connectivity to Ford customers and everyone in a SYNC-equipped car can benefit at no additional expense.”

Upgradeable and secure

One of the main advantages of the SYNC with MyFord Touch WiFi system is that it will allow customers to make use of a variety of USB devices, eliminating the need to purchase specifically compatible equipment. SYNC will use software updates to ensure it remains compatible with the latest hardware and devices, so customers can be sure that their SYNC-equipped vehicles will always allow them to make use of whatever USB mobile broadband modem or smartphone they are using – even devices that have yet to go on the market.

“We knew from the beginning that our connectivity solution would have to keep pace with the rapid advancement of consumer electronics and be flexible and upgradeable in order to remain useful to customers for as long as they own their vehicles,” Kellerwessel said.

SYNC’s WiFi capability will be a user-friendly solution to connecting Ford vehicles to the internet on the move. When it arrives on the new Ford Focus in 2012, the factory-installed system will seamlessly integrate the hardware into the vehicle, unlike internet connection systems from some manufacturers that require a bolt-in receiver and transmitter. With no subscription fee and the ability to provide a secure WiFi connection for up to five devices, SYNC with MyFord Touch will make the Ford Focus the best connected vehicle in its class.

“Because it will be able to make use of a customer’s existing USB modem device or obtain a connection through a smartphone connected via Bluetooth, SYNC will offer the best value and flexibility for Ford customers,” Kellerwesselsaid.

Using the SYNC WiFi system, a signal will be broadcast throughout the vehicle. Default security is set to WiFi Protected Access 2 (WPA2), requiring users to enter a randomly chosen password to connect to the internet. When SYNC sees a new WiFi device for the first time, the driver must specifically allow that device to connect, preventing unauthorised users from “piggybacking” on the SYNC-provided signal.

21/3/2011 - New Ford B-Max 2012?

Ford B-Max: the lowdown

The Blue Oval showed the B-Max concept car at the 2011 Geneva motor show last week, but it is in near-production trim. CAR understands the finished B-Max will be shown in early 2012 with UK sales beginning in summer 2012.

The most noteworthy features of the five-seater Ford B-Max are the lack of B -pillar and a pair of sliding doors - making for the largest door opening (1500mm) in the B-sector. The rear seats and front passenger pew fold flat, turning the B-Max into a minivan for manoeuvring family furniture.

The B-Max business plan

The B-Max is a global car, as part of the One Ford plan, but will not be sold in the US as the States will major on the bigger C-Max and Grand C-Max. It's expected to be a major seller in Europe and Russia and will feature powertrains including Ford's new 1.0-litre three-cylinder EcoBoost engine.

The Ford Fusion continues on sale in the UK until the end of 2011, but will essentially be replaced by the B-Max. The Fusion isn't the white elephant you may expect; it has a small but consistent fanbase, with around 7000 sales every year

THE RIVALS

Vauxhall Astra

GM design has the firepower to match the Ford and the cabin is as classy, but it suffers a ride issue due to cost-cutting twist-beam rear suspension. The Ford also has more equipment.

Volkswagen Golf

The Mk6 Golf isn’t as high quality as its predecessor. Great ride thanks to independent rear end, arguably better diesel engines and certainly healthier residuals, but it’s also pretty dull.

Alfa Romeo Giulietta

Strong start for the new Fiat Group chassis with all-independent suspension, which will underpin all manner of Chryslers, Lancias and Fiats. Great Multiair petrol and tough JTD turbodiesel engines.
